Biological Pest Control: Nematodes As A Chemical-Free Option
Nematodes are microscopic roundworms that occur naturally in soil, and certain species have been developed for use against specific garden pests. Rather than acting as a broad chemical treatment, each nematode species is matched to a particular pest, seeking it out and interrupting its lifecycle with far less impact on the rest of the garden than a chemical spray.
Whole peanuts should be avoided if fledglings are likely to be fed them directly, as they present a choking risk; a mesh feeder that breaks nuts into smaller pieces is the safer option. Hygiene is just as important as food choice: cleaning feeders regularly and moving their position from time to time helps reduce the build-up of bacteria that can spread between visiting birds.
For gardeners wanting an alternative to chemical sprays, a soil-applied option is worth considering as a first step, and a good starting point is a range of slug nematodes for gardens suited to the pest in question.
Design details matter more than they might appear to. Good insect houses combine hollow stems, such as bamboo or reed, with drilled wood blocks offering a range of hole diameters, roughly 2 to 10mm, since different species use different sized cavities. Natural, untreated materials are preferable to anything varnished or chemically treated.
Not every beneficial garden insect lives in a hive or a colony. Many UK bee hotels species are solitary, nesting alone or in loose aggregations, and insects such as lacewings and ladybirds shelter individually or in small clusters, particularly over winter. An insect house gives these species something a tidy garden often lacks: safe, undisturbed nesting and overwintering space.
Leaving a few deliberately untidy corners does more good than a uniformly neat border. A patch of long grass, a stack of logs left to slowly rot down, and leaf litter left in place over winter all provide shelter for insects, amphibians and small mammals that a fully cleared garden simply cannot offer.
